Study trip to Panam Nagar

As part of ‘Bangla Borsho Boron Utshab 1417’ Design Studio II of Architecture department arranged a trip to Panam Nagar on April 15, 2010. Panam Nagar, the old urban settlement in Sonargaon, portrays rich architectural and archeological heritage of Bengal. The trip was about building a sense of pride in students for Bengal architectural heritage. Students along with faculties explored the old linear settlement walking through the ruins. The exploration of heritage components such as architectural details, decorative ornamentation of interior and exterior façades of the buildings, design of openings, and terra-cotta craftsmanship was documented through photography and pencil sketches. The trip ended with visit to the Craft Museum and the Baishaki Mela at museum premise. Panam nagar is a unique and rare example of linear urban settlement which blends Bengal and European architecture. A comprehensive approach is imperative to conserve our ‘Living Heritage’.
