The Department of Economics at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), organized a special session titled “Study in UK: Global Career Opportunities in Economics” on December 15, 2024, at the Media Studio, AIUB. The session was honored by the presence of Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice-Chancellor of AIUB, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Pro Vice-Chancellor of AIUB, and Prof. Dr. Tazul Islam, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at AIUB.
The distinguished speakers of the event included Professor Michael Naef, Head of the Department of Economics, Durham University, UK, and Dr. Habib Rahman, Professor in the same department.
The program commenced with a welcome speech by Dr. Faria Sultana, Head of the Department of Economics, AIUB. Following this, the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam, delivered an inspiring speech, expressing his gratitude to the speakers and appreciation for the enthusiastic participation of the audience.
Professor Michael Naef then took the stage to discuss the opportunities for advanced studies in Economics, particularly at Durham University, UK. He highlighted the global prospects for Economics graduates and emphasized the diverse, interdisciplinary career pathways available to them.
Building on these insights, Professor Habib Rahman spoke about the critical skills required to excel as an economist. He emphasized innovation in research and shared examples of groundbreaking academic studies, offering practical guidance on initiating research work. Dr. Rahman also stressed the importance of skill development, motivation, and research-driven learning for aspiring economists.
In a collaborative spirit, Professor Naef shared examples of interdisciplinary research projects, illustrating the cross-disciplinary ideas shaping the global landscape of Economics. He encouraged students to explore innovative research areas to enhance their career opportunities on a global scale.
The session concluded with an engaging open-floor discussion where students and faculty members posed questions to the speakers. The event ended on a celebratory note as the Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor, and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences presented crests and gift packs to the invited speakers.
