The Department of Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE) , in collaboration with the IEOM AIUB Student Chapter, recently hosted a highly insightful webinar on "Sustainability and SDGs". The seminar aimed to deepen students' understanding of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and their significance in contemporary global discourse.
The esteemed speaker for the event was Prof. Dr. Mazharul Islam, Faculty Member, Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering (MPE), Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST).
The seminar commenced with a warm welcome and introduction from the host, followed by an enlightening speech of Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan, Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, shedding light on the importance of the webinar's theme.
Prof. Dr. Mazharul Islam engaged the audience starting with an interactive assessment, gauging their prior knowledge on sustainability and SDGs. Throughout his speech, he elucidated the historical evolution of sustainable development, delineated the three pillars of SDGs, and expounded on the Triple bottom line PPP model. Drawing a clear distinction between sustainable development and sustainability, he meticulously outlined the 17 SDGs and their associated targets. Highlighting the minimal progress made in recent years, Prof. Islam provided valuable insights into the challenges hindering SDG achievement and proposed strategies for overcoming them.
The session culminated in a comprehensive question-answer segment, where Prof. Islam addressed queries from the engaged participants. Following this, Dr. Md. Saniat Rahman Zishan, Associate Professor and Director, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB and Dr. Md. Ehasanul Haque, Senior Assistant Professor and Head, Department of IPE, AIUB honored Prof. Islam with a crest in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field.
This seminar successfully covered the following goals out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the UN: Reduced inequalities (SDG 10) and Climate action (SDG 13). Sustainable development also encompasses sustainable practices in the industry and this works in favour of the greater good (SDG 10), while sustainability as a whole focuses on actively tackling the climate change crisis and all we can do to reduce the advancement of global warming any further (SDG 13).
