They say, "You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”, and that holds truer now than ever when the world is caught up in complexities and turmoil. A single act of kindness sends out a million ripples of hope, and to those less fortunate, that can make all the difference in the world. And with that very notion, the AIUB Social Welfare Club – Shomoy, undertook the fund-raising campaign for one of their flagship initiatives to spread the joy amongst the underprivileged, “Oder Eid, Amader Khushi”.
The week-long campaign reached out to students, faculty members, and administrative officials on campus, garnering overwhelming support for the initiative. Through the final days of Ramadan, club members voluntarily worked towards preparing gift baskets for those in need, that included essential food items for Eid, like rice, lentils, oil, spice mixes, potatoes, onions, salt, sugar, milk, and vermicelli. The funds raised enabled the initiative to share the spirit of Eid-ul-Fitr with the families of approximately 150 children currently enrolled at Kathpencil Pathshala, a school for the underprivileged, where the club members volunteer on a regular basis. On the 5th of April 2024, coinciding with the club’s 15th anniversary, the AIUB Shomoy Club, together with Dr. Manzur H. Khan, the Proctor of AIUB, distributed the gift baskets to the children at the school premises. The initiative to provided necessities to the underprivileged children and their families, fosters a sense of community between us, and besides being a testament to the club’s commitment and an inspiration for their peers, celebrating the festive occasion with the genuine smiles of happiness amongst the children has an invaluable impact on both in the long run.
AIUB takes great pride in these young compassionate students leading the way to bring about positive changes in the society as we know it. Indeed, charity begins at home, but it certainly should not end there. We may make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give, and no one has ever regretted doing that. In these difficult times of chaos, it is crucial that our next generation embrace diversity, inclusion, and tolerance as they strive towards creating a better future for themselves and the youth of tomorrow.
