MPH Seminar on Global Climate Change & Ethics

The 5th of June was World Environment Day. Keeping this special day in mind The Department of Public Health of AIUB organized a seminar on "Global Climate Change and Ethics" in the AIUB Auditorium which was chaired by Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Charles C. Villanueva. Prof. Dr. Tazul Islam and Prof. Dr. Ahmad Neaz were also present on the occasion. Two special guests Shudha S and Dr. Neetu Sharma were also present.

Dr. Md. Aurangzeb, coordinator of MPH Program started the program with a wonderful video presentation on “Global Warming and Climate Change” and due to this delightful and informative demonstration on the subject, no formal introduction was required. Dr. Ahmad Neaz then came on the stage an introduced the two speakers of the seminar.

Shudha S, one of the speakers of the program then gave her fantastic speech where she stated that it was very nice to see everyone in the hall as it showed that we are all concerned. She also stated that climate change is a very complex issue but no one knows who is responsible for it and the degradation of the environment. She also stated that the culture of the Asian terrain especially the Subcontinent is very much different and it does not affect the environment much. It is actually the Over consumption class in the world who is to blame for this climate change and thus a clear inequality lies between the over consumption class and the least consumption class. she also stated that we need to look after our own resources and we definitely need to work on our GDP and social mobility as the situation now is not a fight between growth of a nation and Environment. A global alliance is needed to protect our environment and we all need to move forward on the issue keeping our hands together for the cause.

Dr. Neetu Sharma then took the floor and talked about food security and its relation with climate change. She suggested a right based approach for food safety and various ethical issues about the climate change. She also mentioned that regarding the food safety issue unilateral approach is not efficient as it is not the duty of the state only to provide the basic rights but it’s an issue which should be looked upon by all.

In the question answering session Dr. Neetu answered the questions poised by the students and faculty members of AIUB with great efficiency and everyone was very much enthusiastic in participation. The students of the MPH department were very much ecstatic of being able to participate in the event which was jeweled by such great activists for the environment.

"Let’s save our environment, lets provide a better place for our future generation"

The Department of Public Health acknowledges the generous support by the AIUB Management in making the program a success.
