The 18th of April 2011 arrived as a splendid Monday and the class of studio VI, studio V and few other students with six faculty members including Dr. Sanjib Barua, Ms. Sudipta Barua of Architecture Department made a trip to National Assembly Building, Sher E BanglaNagar, Dhaka.
National Assembly Building is one of the majestic public buildings. The Sangsad Bhavan complex is located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar of Dhaka city. National Assembly Building is an architectural masterpiece for which the nation is proud of.
Starting from the beginning of architectural history, say from the time of the Pyramids till modern times, if a list of most significant buildings of the world is made, the National Assembly building complex will feature very prominently among the top few in that list. It can be said to be the culmination of the modern period of architecture and the beginning of that of the post-modern era. This magnificent building stands as a silent evidence of the creative devotion and poetic vision of its American architect, Louis I Kahn.
The project originally consisted of the National Assembly building and three hostels (that is, temporary accommodations for officials and delegates coming from West Pakistan when parliament was in session). One hostel was for ministers, one for secretaries, and one for the delegates to the National Assembly. The assembly and hostels were grouped together and called the "Citadel of the Assembly." An early version shows some civic functions, called by the architect the "Citadel of the Institutions," grouped opposite the assembly, but none of its constituents was ever built, and in 1971 it was replaced by the National Secretariat of Bangladesh. After 1975, the nation became more stable, and the project was revived. The capítol complex was again seen as a symbol, this time of the new government's stability and accomplishments.
Site visit and Hands on education are two vital parts of architecture curriculum. Students have taken photographs and done sketches of the site features. They are preparing a report on the trip.
The successful trip has inspired the students with a delightful exposure to the master piece by Louis I Kahn.
