Webinar on “Engineering Education for Industry 5.0: Are We Ready?”

On February 04, 2024, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Faculty of Engineering(FE), American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) , in collaboration with AIUB Community of Engineering Students-(ACES) organized a webinar titled " Engineering Education for Industry 5.0: Are We Ready?". The program started at 8:00 PM with over 98 participants through Microsoft Teams. The purpose of the webinar was assessing the readiness of current engineering education systems for the demands of Industry 5.0 by emphasizing the need for a holistic approach that prioritizes interdisciplinary skills, adaptability, and practical experience.

The event started with a warm introduction by the keynote speaker, Prof Dr. Soma Chakrabarti (Engineering Educator, President, International Association for Continuing Engineering Education, Former Lead for Education Research, Ansys R&D, Former President and CEO, Bio Comp Systems, Inc). She began the session by drawing from a pandemic scenario, illuminating the shift to virtual schooling and remote work, anticipating a significant transformation from face-to-face to remote learning. She also navigated through the current landscape of Industry 4.0, forecasting the imminent arrival of Industry 5.0 as a visionary approach, surpassing efficiency goals, and emphasizing the societal contribution of industry. Later, central to her presentation was the vision of humans working collaboratively with robots and smart machines, leveraging advanced technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data. Then, she also advocated for a Skills-first framework, Global Skills Taxonomy, data literacy in the curriculum, and the incorporation of Problem-Based Learning, offering valuable insights into preparing for Industry 5.0. Furthermore, she presented seamlessly combined industry foresight, technological insight, and educational strategy, contributing significantly to the event's informative and engaging atmosphere. Then, a short Q/A session was held for the participants.

Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan (Professor, Associate Dean, FE, AIUB) concluded the webinar by thanking the speaker and presented a virtual crest and certificate to the honorable speaker. This webinar successfully covered the following goals out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the UN: Quality Education (SDG 4), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)
