On Tuesday, December 17th, 2024, the Center for VLSI and Embedded Systems (CVES), AIUB supported by IEEE AIUB Student Branch, successfully organized a seminar titled “Future Trends, Jobs, and Knowledge in the Semiconductor Industry”. The event aimed to engage students with the semiconductor industry, a multibillion-dollar sector driving economic growth. With smartphone market saturating, new technologies and applications offer promising opportunities for innovation and career advancement.
The seminar began with an inaugural speech by Prof. Dr. A.B.M Siddique Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, American International University–Bangladesh, Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch. He discussed the growing significance of VLSI (Very Large-Scale Integration) in modern technology, highlighted Ulkasemi Pvt. Ltd. as a permanent partner of AIUB, and shared insights on semiconductors, chipsets, quantum computing, and Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), along with AIUB's global recognition and future opportunities in VLSI. Following the inauguration, Dr. Shah Musa, Director of Design Verification, Ulkasemi Pvt. Ltd., delivered an engaging session covering semiconductor design and manufacturing, the importance of analog and digital design, Design for Testing (DFT), synthesis (Netlist), physical design, verification, and the complexity and cost of chipset fabrication. He emphasized resource channeling, validation, and testing, while also highlighting the essential courses and skills required to secure jobs in this sector.
Mr. Md. Muzammel Hossain, Manager, Branding and PR, Ulkasemi Pvt. Ltd., then shared insights into the company’s hiring process, including written exams and viva, training procedures, and skill analysis, along with courses designed to prepare future engineers for the semiconductor industry. The seminar concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Shahriyar Masud Rizvi, Associate Professor and Deputy Director, Dr. Anwarul Abedin Institute of Innovation, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, AIUB. He emphasized the various sectors and outcomes of VLSI, discussed the semiconductor industry’s future, and encouraged students to take initiative in developing their skills beyond the traditional education system.
The seminar successfully connected academia and industry, providing students with practical insights into semiconductor trends, job opportunities, and required skills. It aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by equipping students with industry-specific knowledge, fostering innovation, and encouraging collaborations like AIUB’s partnership with Ulkasemi Pvt. Ltd. By raising awareness and offering guidance, the seminar motivated students to pursue careers in this dynamic field and contribute to sustainable development and innovation.
The event began at 03:00 PM and ended around 06:00 PM. A total of 90+ participants attended the event. Honorable faculty member Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB; Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch, Dr. Ebad Zahir, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of EEE, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Mr. Md. Shahariar Parvez, Assistant Professor, Special Assistant [OSA], Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Mr. Abir Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Special Assistant [EEE], Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB were among the participants.
