On December 19th, 2024, and January 9th, 2025, Faculty of Engineering (FE), AIUB Organized an Industrial Tour to the DESCO 132/33 KV Grid substation at Bashundhara R/A which. A group of a total of 37 students from FE, AIUB along with Prof. Dr. Muhibul Haque Bhuyan (Professor, Dept. of EEE, AIUB) visited the substation in 2 groups.
Engr. Saiful Islam, Assistant Engineer, DESCO of the grid substation, received the AIUB team upon their arrival. Later, the team was provided with a guided tour inside the substation area. They started from the supply side, where the substation is connected from Tongi and Rampura at 132 kV using two circuits through overhead cabling. Then they showed the distribution side, where 5 distribution transformers are located to step down the voltage levels to 33 kV. Finally, they showed the control room operation, where PLC and software-based control operations were shown. They demonstrated to the students how a transformer is connected to the live grid from the control center during the off condition. Engineers and technicians demonstrated different maintenance operations in the open field.
Participants from AIUB expressed their warm gratitude towards the authority of DESCO for their great support and assistance. The visit proved to be an enriched learning experience, allowing the students to gain invaluable insights into the sophisticated workings of modern gas-insulated (GIS) substations. The visit aligned with SDG 4 (Quality education).
Upon the completion of the site visit, Prof. Dr. Muhibul Haque Bhuyan thanked all the officials of the substation for their proficient guidance and presented a few AIUB souvenirs as a token of appreciation to the substation's high officials for their help and cooperation.
