Idiom of Music in Visual Art
A Proposition Base Workshop for Architecture Students
A daylong workshop to promote brainstorming practices among the students regarding different branches of art was conducted with the students of Architecture Department (Studio 1) on Friday, March 22, 2013 at Campus -7. In the workshop the students were instructed to stay within an ideological parameter where they had to take the popular assumption of spontaneous mental output of music to a formal composition. In reality they were rather inspired by abstract painting to be particular and tried to produce compositions relating to the theme of a given musical piece. The aim of this experimental event went along with the widely accepted idea of ‘Synaesthesia’. In brief, Synaesthesia is a relatively rare yet harmless condition which allows a person to interpret sounds, colors or words with two or more senses simultaneously.
The students were given 11 different musical tracks without any lyrics. At first they were informed about the basic idea of Synaesthesia and were taught few coloring techniques [like color mixing, blending, toning, spraying, texturing, etc] on canvas. They had moved out through two steps in the form of presentation, where at first they had prepared the composition by interacting directly with the canvas, and in the second half they produced compositions inspired from the same music without having direct contact with the canvas.
However the idea of the workshop is not to explore complex mental condition yet to build a platform for 1st semester students to practice a communication between music and architectural composition. The workshop provided an opportunity to practice theory rich design execution in the root level of architectural studies. Azizul Mohith and Sumaya Islam, Lecturers of Dept. of Architecture conducted the workshop. The extended support of the Department Head and other faculties, and office executives made this event a success.
