English Department organized teacher training session on UGC-British Council new modules

The Department of English organized a training and demonstration session for its faculty members on 22 May 2014 at 11 am at Campus 7 on techniques to deal with the new student-centered General English modules inside classrooms. Conducted by Mr. M Hamidul Haque, Assistant Professor of the department (who is also the project coordinator and an authorized Master Trainer by the British Council), the session was participated by the faculty members of the department who are teaching the two new modules prepared jointly by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh and The British Council titled ‘English for Academic Purposes-1’ and ‘English for Academic Purposes-2’. These modules are the outcomes of an extensive project on English in our higher education conducted over a span of almost 2 years by national and international English Language experts and teachers. Since AIUB has been a crucial partner of this project since the beginning, the English Department started implementing these modules from Spring 2014 which—despite all sorts of challenges—turned out to be greatly successful. Students responded very well to the comprehensive four-skills-based tasks and came up with much improved performances in exams. In continuance of the efforts of last semester, the English Department has decided to implement these modules with greater creativity and focus more on the weaker students in the classes.
