IEEE AIUB Student Branch hosted a seminar on "Effective Teaching Methods for VLSI Circuit Design Courses” organized by IEEE Bangladesh Section Educational Activity and Young Professional Bangladesh Affinity Group on 16th January 2017 at Room No. 266, Faculty of Engineering Building, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). The seminar was conducted by esteemed speaker Dr. Mahfuzul Aziz, Professor, School of Engineering, University of South Australia. The main emphasis of the seminar is to feature on the benefits, prospects, and requirements of a potential career in VLSI Circuit Design futuristic prospects and teaching methods of VLSI Circuit design courses.
Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Siddique Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB & Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch commenced the event by giving the welcome speech. He gave a brief idea about the history of VLSI design and talked about the improvement of transistor industries from first commercially available microprocessor by Intel (Intel 4004 Chip) to Intel’s 14 nm processor (Skylake) launched in August 2015. Then the floor was given to the speaker Prof. Dr. Mahfuzul Aziz. He started the session by discussing the changes that have been made over the years in the integration industries. Then he talked about the teaching methods in Australia by discussing one of his paper published in IEEE Trans. on education. He also emphasized the importance of Project-based Learning (PBL) in engineering education. He discussed the main four courses of PBL, which is known as the SPINE of PBL. Then he gave a brief idea of evaluating students based on their projects. At the end, he showed us some of his projects and answered some of the question asked by the audience.
Then, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch & Director, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB gave the closing speech and spoke about the benefits of project-based learning. He also mentioned that it will be a good idea to introduce project-based learning in AIUB. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdul Mannan Head (Undergraduate Program), Dept. of EEE and COE, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Chowdhury Akram Hossain, Secretary, IEEE Bangladesh Section; Advisor, IEEE AIUB SB; Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering; Sp. Asst., OSA, AIUB, Dr. Md. Tanvir Hasan Professional Activity Coordinator, IEEE Bangladesh Section & Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Mr. Shams Shah Islam Khan Chair, IEEE Young Professionals Bangladesh and Dr. M. Tanseer Ali Counselor, IEEE AIUB SB & Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB graced the event with their presence. Some faculty members and graduate students from the different university also attended the seminar.
