On 7th December 2017, the Department of Physics of American International University-Bangladesh presented a seminar on “Nuclear Energy and Its Prospect in Bangladesh” powered by IEEE AIUB Student Branch and IEEE AIUB Student Branch Women In Engineering Affinity Group. The seminar was emphasized on different types of reactor used in nuclear power plants, front-end fuel management, back-end waste management, nuclear radiation and a brief overview of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and its prospect in Bangladesh. Two hundred enthusiasts in the field of Nuclear Engineering took part in the venture.
The seminar was inaugurated with an opening speech by honorable Prof. Dr. Tafazzal Hossain, Vice President, Academics & Dean, Faculty of Science and Information Technology, AIUB, who discussed the future of Nuclear Energy in Bangladesh. He then gave the stage to honorable Prof. Dr. M.A. Wadud Mondal, Honorable VC, the University of South Asia, who gave a review of the technical data of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and discussed its nuclear capability along with its safety assurance. Later, he explained the main features of VVER (Water-Water Energetic Reactor) and PWR (Pressurized water reactors) to which he concluded his session.
Next on stage was honorable Prof. M.A. Quaiyum, Professor of Faculty of Engineering, AIUB; Member, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant; Former Chairman, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, who discussed the history of nuclear disasters in the world. He then emphasized on the foundations of a nuclear accident and how preparations could be taken to prevent a possible disaster.
Following that, the keynote speaker of the seminar, Prof. Dr. Afroza Shelley, Doctor of Nuclear Engineering; Head, Department of Physics, AIUB, took the stage and initiated her presentation by reviewing the present power situation of our country and how the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will meet the current power demands of Bangladesh. Then she discussed the working principle of a nuclear power station in details. Then she explained the use of different parts of a nuclear reactor which include a moderator, coolant, control rod, pressure tube, steam generator and much more. She then demonstrated a video presentation on the safety features of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The speaker concluded her speech with an interactive question and answer session with the participants.
For the concluding speech, our honorable Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Siddique Hossain, Advisor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch; Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, discussed the importance of establishing a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. He emphasized on the needs for producing more energy to meet the demands of our country. Following that, Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Siddique Hossain and Prof. Dr. Tafazzal Hossain gave small tokens of appreciation to Prof. Dr. M. A. Wadud Mondal, Prof. M. A. Quaiyum, and Prof. Dr. Afroza Shelley respectively. The venture concluded with a photo session with the honorable speakers, respected faculty members and fellow participants. The seminar was graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. S. Mosaddeq Ahmed, Head, Natural Science (Chemistry), AIUB, Dr. Farzana Sabeth, Associate Professor, Natural Science (Physics), AIUB, Dr. S. N. M. Azizul Hoque, Senior Assistant Professor, Natural Science (Physics), AIUB, Dr. Md. Habib Ullah Associate Professor, Natural Science (Physics) & Ms. Salma Begom, Senior Assistant Professor, Natural Science (Physics), AIUB and many others.
