Department of English Celebrates International Mother Language Day and Welcomes Freshers and Arrival of Spring
The Department of English, AIUB celebrated the International Mother Language Day along with welcoming the Spring, the queen of seasons and the freshmen in the Department of English on February 19, 2017 at AIUB auditorium. The event symbolized the festival of colors, coherence of heart and a refreshing start of life. The spring had inspired many writers, poets, singers of our country and continues to do so. The Department of English, AIUB ventured to get inspired similarly.
Shamim Azad, an acclaimed UK-based renowned poet and story teller, was the chief guest on the occasion. The program opened with a minute of silence in remembrance of Ms. Hasna Abedin, honorable ex-chairperson and founder member of AIUB Trustee Board. What was unique about the afternoon that there was poetry recitation by students, faculty members and alumni in different languages and dialects, celebrating the international solidarity with Amar Ekushey. Along with several poetry performances and songs in Bangla, there was performance of Turkish poetry by a Turkish student Betul Celik and Pilipino poetry by Ms. Rani Ellen V. Ramos and Mr. Danilo G. Morgia. There was also a trilingual performance rendered by Mr. Borendra Lal Tripura who read out his original poem in Tripura language while a student of English Department Anika Islam recited the English trans-creation of the poem and Theotoneous Gomes rendered the Bengali version. Another unique edge of the program was different dialects of Bangla language was celebrated. Thus, there was also rendition from Sylheti, Dhakaiya and other dialects of Bangla. Ekush is no more a time for solemnity or sorrow but it is a victory for Bangla language and its martyrs. Therefore, the mood of the afternoon was celebratory. The rest of the evening was filled with songs and dances in the celebration of Spring, the season of love, romancing and dreaming.
