Abstract
Communication and interaction of people have significantly changed due to the effect of social media, which can be defined as an essential component of our daily interaction. This means that students get to practice different styles of writing on social media platforms, simplistic in form, which are underpinned by formal, structured writing. Writing, nevertheless, is widely acknowledged as one of the most difficult skills to teach or learn due to its pedagogical requirements, such as grammar, spelling, punctuation, and quality of the vocabulary used when composing a piece of writing. This research aims to evaluate the level of interaction by Bangladeshi undergraduate EFL students in social media and the correlation between their social media usage and writing proficiency. In total, 62 undergraduate students from different areas of Bangladesh participated in this study. The data were collected using questionnaires developed to capture students’ attitudes and practices regarding social media usage. It has been established that the majority of respondents use social media, and a good number of them consider social media as an important tool in the improvement of their academic writing skills. These findings indicate that once instructed appropriately, students can improve the kind of language experience available in these communities and use social media as an addition to learn and practice writing language. The present research points to the possibilities in exploring social media as an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing the writing ability of learners of EFL.
