Abstract

Bangladesh, as one of the countries most affected by climate change, faces rising salinity, cyclones, flooding, and erosion along its coast. One of the country’s most socio-economically vulnerable groups is women. Due to their lack of access to education, resources, and their inability to take part in meaningful economic activities. Following from this overall aim, an objective related to each of these concepts can be identified. Thus, the primary objective of this research is to study the impact that access to such an education may have upon women in these areas. Descriptive statistical methods have been employed to help research the association between access to education for females and their ability to diversify their livelihoods, in particular as it relates to participating in Climate Smart Agriculture, Aquaculture, Small Enterprises and in Renewable Energy Projects. Ultimately, the research indicates that an investment into women-focused education will lower vulnerability, while at the same time promoting inclusive governance, resilience for households, and ultimately promoting climate-resilient development on a long-term basis within coastal Bangladesh. In conclusion, empowering women through gender-responsive education plays an important role in developing climate-resilient coastal livelihoods in Bangladesh. Improving access to climate-focused education enhances the climate resilience of women. Sustainable development in the coastal region of Bangladesh depends on investing in the knowledge and skills of women to enhance their climate adaptation.
