Abstract
Background: Bangladesh and its citizens are under the constant possibility of cybercrimes, a scenario that keeps their sectors hanging on a thin rope consequently. The internet is growing, and with it also ways (or types) of hacking and dealing with cybercrime become more frequent. This, however, brings new challenges to system security and public safety. The goal of this research is to examine cybercrime trends across five major categories: cyberbullying, financial scams, hacking cases, app-based fraud, and child victims. That will run from 2018 to 2023 to identify the most important cybercrime issues. Methods: Quantitative data was generated by combining information from government and cybersecurity agencies to analyse the evolving cybercrime trend. The statistics acquired between 2018 and 2023 were sorted into five categories: cyberbullying, financial scams, hacking cases, app-based fraud, and child victims. Then, the records were studied to notice the trend of crime, developments in the frequency, and any relationship that may exist between the increase of the digital service and cybercrime incidents. Results: The outcomes of the study reveal the adverse effects of cybercrime, which include financial scams, hacking, and app-based fraud becoming even more widespread. A larger proportion of the available children were gradually abused; 6.15% in 2018 to an estimated 16% in the year 2023 as the latest figures stand. In the meantime, although the incisions of disappointed kids are improving progressively, however, the overall scenario is still that the level of crime is rising which as well is due to the country's quick digitalization and rising use of the internet. Conclusion: The research was a wakeup call for the authorities to take the implementation of stronger cybersecurity policies, sharper public awareness campaigns, and the enactment of more punishments for cases of abuse, especially of the younger generation as a priority. Progress will depend on the involvement of all the stakeholders, including governmental institutions, private businesses, and civil movements to work together against the far brought up crime and to generate a safe online environment in Bangladesh.
