Abstract
Companies today face pressure not only to grow but also to prove that they are operating responsibly. Sustainability reporting, usually done through Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks, has become the main channel for this. Yet the current system has obvious flaws: information is often scattered, standards vary widely, and the numbers can be interpreted in very different ways. These weaknesses make it difficult for stakeholders to judge performance with confidence. Artificial intelligence offers new ways to address these gaps. Machine learning can track carbon emissions across supply chains, natural language processing can scan large volumes of company reports, and predictive models can highlight risks such as resource shortages or compliance failures before they occur. In practice, these tools can cut down on manual work while producing results that are easier to compare across firms. This paper reviews how AI is already being used in sustainability assessment and suggests a practical framework for building AI-powered dashboards within governance structures. Such dashboards could turn static reports into living systems, where progress is monitored continuously and key indicators are projected into the future rather than only reported after the fact. Still, challenges remain. Algorithms can be biased, sensitive data needs protection, and companies risk leaning too heavily on automated tools. If used with the right safeguards, however, AI can make sustainability reporting more credible and accessible, giving businesses a better chance to align growth with long-term social and environmental priorities.
