Movies can create moments that captivate our imagination and inspire our spirits. And our films tell our stories - local stories told with a global lens. That's the power of a thriving local film industry that celebrates the richness of our culture. With the aim of promoting and presenting culture onto screens, on the 1st of July 2024, the American International University - Bangladesh (AIUB) witnessed a star-studded event on campus, presented by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and organized by the AIUB Film Club (AFC), to promote the recent web series “Golam Mamum” that premiered on the OTT platform, Hoichoi.
A spin-off based on a character from Mr. Tanim Rahman Angshu's "Buker Moddhe Agun", the story focuses on a dedicated cop who is pursued by a serial killer, while trying to clear his name and racing against time to uncover the truth behind a gruesome double homicide. Following the showcasing of the trailer for “Golam Mamum”, the cast and crew of the web series, including actors, Mr. Ziaul Faruq Apurba, Ms. Sabila Nur, and Mr. Imtiaz Barshon, along with the director, Mr. Shihab Shaheen and the Country Director of Hoichoi Technologies Bangladesh Ltd., Mr. Sakib R. Khan, each took to the stage to share their experience of shooting the web series as well as their own take on the synopsis of the intriguing storyline. They also engaged with the audience through an interactive Q&A session, as well as an impromptu quiz competition, where those with the correct answers were presented with T-Shirts of the web series. The audience was also given a sneak peek at a fight-sequence clip of Mr. Apurba and Ms. Sabila from “Golam Mamum”.
The guests all emphasized on the importance of supporting local platforms and avoiding piracy to help enrich and flourish the film industry of Bangladesh, offering an exclusive discount coupon to all students and staff of AIUB, with which they can enjoy the platform’s vast library of content at an exclusive price. The event's thunderous applause still resonates amongst the students who experienced the cinematic spectacle of a Bangladeshi web series that set itself apart reaching for international standards in filmmaking. Once engrossed into a show like this, everyone eagerly awaits the next episode, as the series unfolds into a tapestry of stories meticulously crafted to leave a mark on their hearts and minds. And AIUB takes great pride in its students who constantly work towards highlighting the incredible talent that is taking our local cinematic landscapes to greater heights.
