Department of English successfully organized a poetry competition entitled “Poetry in Image and Verses” on 20Th November 2018. This competition also included a photography and painting competition with the themes of “Finding Happiness” and “Memories with AIUB”. Eminent Poet and Ekushey Padak Awardee Mohammad Nurul Huda was present in the program as the chief guest and one of the judges for poetry competition.
Inaugurated by the honorable Dean of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Professor Dr. Tazul Islam, the program started with a brief farewell of outgoing students as well as welcoming the freshers of Fall semester 2018-19. The competition started with judges enjoying and assessing the outstanding photos and paintings submitted by students from different departments. Following this, the poetry competition took place in three segments - recitation of popular poetry; recitation of self-composed poems; and finally, poetry performances. Students’ spontaneous participation added to the vibrance of the whole initiative. Besides recitations of both Bengali and English poems – either popular or self-composed, performances on literary masterpieces like Ulysses or the monologue of Helena from All’s Well that Ends Well made the program a happening one. The presence and talk of Professor Dr. Charles C. Villanueva, honorable Vice President (Academics) and the Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration had been an inspiration for the students. Results were announced right after the chief guest’s speech and recitation, followed by a vote of thanks from the honorable Head of the department, M Hamidul Haque. With this program, the department keeps up to its tradition of organizing extra-curricular activities in every semester with continuous help and support by Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and AIUB management.
