Members of various AIUB Student Clubs under the “Green Link Dhaka” project organized a cleaning campaign in the campus and surrounding areas on April 6-7, 2011. “Green Link Dhaka” is a project that envisioned the cleanliness of Dhaka. The main idea revolved around upgrading the environmental conditions as well as the beauty of the city. The plan was to raise the awareness of the local residents regarding the conditions of their environment. During the campaign the students of AIUB indulged in two-day long activities of cleaning up their campus as well as the surrounding streets and dirty areas of Banani. This event was backed-up by: Seminars, Rally, Films, Street Drama and Concerts. The program was organized by Jihye Kwak from South Korea, Yuta Iyama from Japan (International Coordinator), and Asif Hasan (Local Coordinator). The team was also supported by ABC (AIUB Business Club), ADC (AIUB Drama Club), Shomoy Club, AFC (AIUB film club), APAC (AIUB Performance Art Club) and AIUB students. Through this event, the team aimed to transmit the message to all the Bangladeshi people that every individual is responsible for keeping their locality and areas clean.
The opening ceremony was conducted at 11am on the 6th April, 2011. The chief guest was Jung-Wook Lee – the resident representative – from KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency). Professor Dr. Charles C. Villanueva – Dean, Faculty of Business Administration – attended the event as the special guest. After the opening ceremony, both the students as well as the teachers gathered everyone and started a rally around the campus. The idea was to motivate the youth to take the initiative for developing and improving the environmental conditions of the country, because, the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.
During the “Cleaning Process”, both volunteers as well as student representatives tediously worked around the premises of AIUB’s Banani campus. They worked as “Pickers” and “Cleaners” and focused on removing all sorts of garbage and litter in and around the area. The volunteers joined at random and included both club members as well as non-club members. The team was divided into many sub-groups and were assigned into different zones for cleaning. The Dhaka City Corporation supported by taking away the collected garbage to the Dumping Stations. AUIB Management supported the cause with logistics and gloves. During the cleaning process, the groups tried motivating the residents and public of each of the different zones and encouraged them to maintain this chain in the near future.
During the second day, 7th April, the team organized a concert performed by ABC (AIUB business club) to further raise awareness and also to motivate the participants. In addition to this, ADC (AIUB Drama club) performed “Street Drama”. Both these events really made the day a memorable one, and were a fitting finale to a noble cause.
We love Bangladesh! We want our Green Bangladesh to always stay Green!!
