Eid has always been one of the most awaited and celebrated festivals in Bangladesh. From the delicious feasts to the beautiful new clothes, we spend our time enjoying some quality time with friends and family. But most of us tend to forget that not everyone is as blessed and privileged. Numerous families are still suffering in poverty just within Dhaka city, and amidst their struggles, the ones who are deprived the most are the children. The young ones who are supposed to frolic carefree through the days of their childhood, are forced to beg for alms and make do with what little they have.
So, each year, we do what we can to bring a little bit of happiness into their lives. The AIUB Social Welfare Club, ‘Shomoy’ raises funds from the students, faculty members, and officers, to provide new clothes to the underprivileged children this Eid-ul-Fitr. Together with the support of the Management and coordination from the Office of Student Affairs [OSA], ‘Shomoy’ was able to raise 90, 000 BDT in funds for the cause. On the 3rd of July 2016, new clothes were distributed to around 300 happy students, between the ages of 3 to 14 years, of 2 voluntary local school for the underprivileged, ‘Shishushorgo’ and ‘Diptoshikha’, in the Tejgaon and Mirpur area.
Sharing the joy of Eid, is something all of us can experience with our friends and family, but taking the initiative to do so with those less fortunate than us, ‘Shomoy’ has upheld the values on which AIUB was founded. AIUB always prides itself on being represented by such students who constantly puts others’ needs before their own, helping build this society for a brighter future, for not just themselves, but for us altogether.
