The American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), in collaboration with TESOL Society of Bangladesh (TSB) organized “Discover English 2023: Student Conference on English Language and Literature” with the motto: A conference by the students and for the students! The event took place on Saturday, November 18, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), Kuril, Dhaka.
Discover English is organized annually by the Department of English, AIUB with the aim of fostering student leadership and to provide a platform for the students to present their research among the academic spheres.
The conference received an overwhelming response from the students, and a total of 128 reviewed research papers of undergraduate and postgraduate students from the disciplines of English Language and Literature of 30 public and private universities across Bangladesh were presented at this day-long conference.
Mr. Ishtiaque Abedin, Founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) presided over the inaugural session. Prof. Dr. Biswajit Chanda, Member, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh graced the event as the chief guest. M Hamidul Haque, Head of the Department of English, AIUB addressed the audience with his welcome speech and Prof. Dr. Sayeedur Rahman delivered his speech on behalf of TESOL Society of Bangladesh.
In the closing ceremony the vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Dr. Tazul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, AIUB and Prof. Dr. Abdur Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor, AIUB conveyed the closing remarks. Group Captain (Retd) Dr. Mohammad Zahidul Islam Khan, Registrar, AIUB shared his thoughts regarding the event and congratulated the Department of English, AIUB for organizing Discover English 2023.
John Paul Shimanto Sarker, Graduate Student, University of Alberta, Canada delivered the keynote speech titled “Publishing as a Graduate Student.” Dr. Sayeda Farzana Sultana was present as the discussant of the keynote session.
The entire event was organized by 60 student volunteers from private and public universities. Amrin Khanom Mifta, undergraduate student of the Department of English, AIUB was the convenor of the conference.
Faculty members from public and private universities provided each paper with constructive feedback. Among all the papers, eight papers in 4 categories in the streams of literature and language received special recognition.
The program was anchored by Shoraz Islam Himel, Dewan Yussra, Shadman Sakib, Rabeya Khatun Ritu; undergraduate students of the Department of English, AIUB.
