Abstract

Objectives This research looks into the consequences of yellow journalism along with politically driven media narratives on the domestic politics of Bangladesh and the country’s global image. The primary objectives focus on the media bias in the Bangladeshi news outlets, the role public sentiment driven by sensationalism, and the impact of such practices on perception of media freedom in Bangladesh. Methodology This study utilized a mixed methods approach that included both quantitative and qualitative techniques such as surveys, case studies, and content analysis. The quantitative analysis included bias and sensationalism assessment of over 1,200 news reports from 2020 to 2024 by major Bangladeshi media outlets Prothom Alo, Daily Star, and Jugantor. Survey data was collected from the Reuters Institute's 2023 Trust in Media Report alongside TIB’s Media Integrity Survey. Case studies on press freedom violations were drawn from RSF and Freedom House reports along with misinformation trend analysis in Bangladesh using fact-checking data from Boom Bangladesh and Dismislab. Results In Bangladesh, over 60% of TV channels exhibit pro-government bias, suppressing opposition voices. During the 2024 elections, 78% of the coverage favored the ruling party, distorting the political narrative. This media bias contributes to a global image decline, with Bangladesh ranking 163rd in press freedom (RSF, 2024), and foreign media frequently highlighting censorship. Public trust in mainstream news is low, with only 28% of Bangladeshis trusting it, while 62% are exposed to fake news weekly.
