Abstract

Background Ensuring healthy lives and well-being, Bangladesh has significantly progressed towards Sustainable Development Goal-3 (SDG 3). However, neonatal mortality is still high. Besides, Women’s autonomy was also identified as a liable factor influencing neonatal outcomes. Purpose This study aims to estimate the connection between women's autonomy and neonatal health outcomes, providing relevant information to make progress for SDG 3. It seeks the pathway to reduce neonatal death, by improving the educational level, economic status and autonomy of women. Methods Using data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS), three dimensions of women's autonomy have been evaluated, namely education, decision making and control over household income. Neonatal outcomes were regressed onto these variables using a logistic regression model. Results The findings show that, the neonatal survivability was observed for women with higher education (OR=0.72; 95% CI: 0.60-0.87, p<0.01). Survivability was also noticed while healthcare decisions were taken by mother independently (OR=0.68; 95% CI=0.55-0.83, p<0.05). Additionally, the decrease of mortality risk was noticed with women’s economic autonomy (OR=0.74; 95%, CI: 0.62-0.90, p<0.05). Conclusion This study recommends that through women’s economic resources, decision making regarding health care and education, neonatal mortality can be reduced. The findings of this study emphasize the need for policies to support women's sovereignty in households and socials that will facilitate healthier neonatal outcomes.
