Abstract

Background Climate change affects agriculture since the production potential of certain crops is dependent upon rainfall and temperature conditions. This research examines the correlation between onion production in Bangladesh and certain meteorological factors, including average air temperature and yearly rainfall from 2014 to 2022. Methods Onion production trends were analyzed using statistical approaches, examining temperature and rainfall. Correlation analysis assessed the correlations among these elements, identifying significant patterns and interactions that influence yields. The information is sourced from the Statistical Yearbook of Bangladesh, the World Bank Climate Change Knowledge Portal, and the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Results A strong positive correlation of 0.88 between onion production and average surface air temperature indicates that the higher the temperature, the higher the yields are usually. The highest production years were 2021 and 2022 with 22.68 and 25.17 Lac M. Tons with matching constant temperatures at 25.7° C. With a moderate value of 0.65, rainfall has a positive relationship with onion output, although abundant rainfall increases yield, severe rainfall reduces it, most likely due to waterlogging. The greatest outputs occurred during years with balanced weather, indicating how consistent temperatures and moderate rainfall go hand in hand with good yields. Conclusion This research demonstrates that meteorological conditions influence the growth of onions in general, enhancing the yield at higher temperatures, however, excessive rainfall is negative. Suitable weather conditions are crucial in sustaining high levels of output. Therefore, policymakers and farmers must create strategies to adjust to changes in weather and encourage stability in farming. Further research on regional variances, including eco-friendly agriculture approaches, should be encouraged to adapt to the changing weather patterns.
