Abstract
Background Student well-being is central to academic success and general development, especially in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 and 4. Recognizing the different factors affecting student well-being is key to establishing an educational setting that nurtures both academic performance and mental health. Objective The study attempts to search the family background and institutional factors that influence the academic and psychological status of undergraduate students at American International University-Bangladesh in the spring semester of the 2023–2024 session. Methods Based on primary data from a sample of 480 students, collected with the help of a refined questionnaire, the research applies statistical modeling to the analysis of complex relationships among variables. A key factor investigated is the family income, parental education, class attendance, and extracurricular activities. Results The PLS-SEM analysis demonstrated significant positive effects of family background and institutional factors on student outcomes. Notably, family income had a substantial impact on institutional factors (β = 0.64, p < 0.01). Furthermore, family background showed a positive relationship with students' academic and psychological well-being (CGPA: β = 0.08, p < 0.01; mental health: β = 0.88, p < 0.01). The constructs exhibited strong reliability, with Cronbach's α values between 0.83 and 0.88, and all Average Variance Extracted (AVE) values were above 0.50. Conclusion This study contributes to the holistic understanding of the interaction among family and institutional influences on student outcomes and also brings in further valuable insights, leading to policy recommendations that would promote a holistic educational environment. Future studies should explore more factors affecting student well-being, including access to mental health resources and socio-political influences.
