Abstract

It can be observed that memes are no longer humorous visuals; rather, they have evolved into a significant means of communication, particularly among Gen Z. The purpose of the study is to explore the transformative role of memes in replacing and complementing traditional text-based peer-to-peer communication and their emergence as a structured visual language. Data is collected through a mixed method approach by utilizing online surveys and analyzing real-life instances of meme-based communication on social media platforms. The qualitative analysis was focused on the semantic and discourse elements of memes, while the quantitative findings sheds light on Genz’s perception and overview about memes as a medium of peer-interaction. This study hypothesizes that memes have evolved into a structured visual language that can complement and replace traditional text-based communication among Gen Z, thereby playing a significant role in their interaction.
