Digital Fatigue and Employee Productivity: A Human-Tech Interaction Study in Remote Workspaces in Bangladesh

Abstract
Remote and hybrid work have accelerated because of the COVID–19 pandemic, leading to more screen and digital workload, and digital fatigue has worsened in Bangladesh. This study looks at digital fatigue and employee productivity from 2015 to 2023 by measuring the connection between screen time, meeting overload, and wellness interventions and how each change workplace outcomes. A mixed-methods approach was taken. Annual time series secondary data from 2015–2023 variables average daily screen time, D-FARS scale digital fatigue scores, productivity index (base year 2015), burnout rates, and wellness tech adoption have been used for quantitative analysis. Regression models and correlation tests were used. Policy document review and sectoral case studies from the tech, garment, banking, and education sectors were utilized for the qualitative analysis. Productivity strongly correlated negatively with digital fatigue (r = –0.79, p < 0.01). Fatigue went up 0.6 points for every hour of screen time. Hitting the meeting overload explained 34 per cent of productivity loss in 2020–2022. Firms that employed wellness technologies had less burnout (22%) and more productivity (14%). Policy interventions post 2021 have early positive impacts. Digital fatigue hampers remote productivity. Bangladesh needs strategic intervention, meeting caps, ergonomic support, and asynchronous workflows to secure the establishment of a sustainable digital work culture.
