Abstract

Background The energy sector of Bangladesh is changing significantly in the production, and use of electricity and natural gas as a demand increase thanks to an industrial growth. Strategic planning in energy security requires knowledge of trends and patterns on production side. Objective To ascertain how Bangladesh has been managing its energy resources, this research studies the year-on-year production trajectory of electricity and natural gas from fiscal years 2017–18 to 2023–24. Methodology The electricity (million kWh) and gas (million cubic meters) production was analyzed using data from Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (National Accounts Statistics, July 2024). Shifts in supply are represented in year-on-year comparisons. Findings Electricity output has risen quickly to meet the expanding demand despite the restricted supply, which was reported at 56,014 million kWh in 2017-18 and predicted to climb to 76,598 million kWh in 2022-23. However, gas output has fallen at the same time as it was 27,430 million cubic meters in 2017-18 to 22,646 million cubic meters and 7.34% is predicted to fall to 20,872 million cubic meters in 2023-24. Similarly, industrial growth was observed at 2.46% in 2022-23 and is expected to collapse to -0.33% in 2023-24. Conclusion As gas supplies are falling in Bangladesh, however, the nation’s dependence on rising power output underlines the significance of adopting non-gas energy expenditures to decrease energy supply risk and support economic development.
