Abstract
Augmented Reality (AR) is a very sophisticated form of technology where computer-generated contents supplements reality technologies. Connecting visual and cognitive mechanisms, AR can redefine practices that people perform throughout their day and industries starting from education to healthcare and entertainment. For its proper realization, it is important to determine what is in the public interest, analyze the trends of adoption, and support for AR. This paper thus discusses AR’s development, adoption, and institutionalization as a disruptive technology. It compares perceived efficiency of AR with mobile phones, reveals the key barriers for its wide implementation and considers the demographic and policy influences to become regular application. Time series data from 2015 to 2023 has been used to acquire global active rhetoric users, market capitalization, consumer engagement, device sales, job opportunities, and policy maturity. Furthermore, an online questionnaire with 1,000 nationally representative participants between 18 and 65 years of age measured AR awareness and the perceived efficiency in comparison with a mobile phone. AR experience rapid uptake, with its users rising from 200 million in 2015 to 600 million in 2023, and market value went up from USD 3.5 billion to 22.5 billion. According to the survey, 68% of the respondents had a positive attitude towards AR with those persons of 18-35 years most interested. In 2023, there were 250 thousand employment opportunities in AR; the number of policies increased from 1 to 9. However, cost, device accessibility, and privacy issues hampered massive ownership in the marketplace. AR has yet untapped the potential to vastly improve productivity and revolutionize human-computer interface experience. The lack of such knowledge, as well as high costs and limited accessibility, is another barrier which can be solved with policies as well as large scale campaigns.
