Abstract
Background: From 2000 to 2024, academic pressure among university students has gradually increased due to excessive competition, financial challenges and pressure to improve performance. Although this pressure is increasing, the impact of this stress on students mental health has not been widely observed. The aim of this study is to establish long term patterns between academic stress and psychological well being among Bangladeshi students. Methods: The study focuses on five chosen variables from a special purpose dataset covering the period from 2000 to 2024 and tracks changes over time. The main variables include the academic pressure index, mental health complaints, counseling access rate, stress-related dropouts and contextually significant events. Relationships between educational stress and psychological outcomes were observed using numbers and statistics. Results: Over the past two decades, academic workload has increased by 95%. As a result, mental health issues have worsened by 4.5 times with a 360% rise in student dropouts. Despite a moderate growth in academic engagement from 5% to 16%, the lack of early intervention processes has contributed significantly to mental distress. Finally growing student protests highlight the severe psychological impact of inhuman academic workloads. Conclusion: This study demonstrates a strong association between academic pressure and deteriorating mental health among university students in Bangladesh. Despite having counselling availability, the continuous rise of psychological distress and dropout rates among students clearly shows that institutional support from universities remains insufficient. The study highlights the importance of balanced academic reforms, more mental health services and launching more awareness steps to ensure students well being as a pillar of sustainable academic success.
