|The 11th Convocation of the American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB) was held yesterday on Sunday, the 30th of January, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC). His Excellency President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the Chancellor of AIUB Mr. Md. Zillur Rahman graced the occasion and presided over the Ceremony. The Convocation was also attended by the Former Advisor of the Caretaker Government, Ministry of Education, Science and ICT, Mr. ASM Shahjahan as the Convocation Speaker. Among others Mr. Nurul Islam Nahid the Honorable Minister, Ministry of Education for the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present as a Special Guest.
The Chairman of AIUB Trustee Board Dr. Anwarul Abedin and the Vice Chancellor of AIUB Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna also spoke on the occasion. On this occasion a total number of 1537 graduates were conferred with their degrees for successfully completing all the academic requirements in various disciplines of the Bachelor and Master’s Degree Programs of the University.
The following Medals were awarded in different categories for academic and other excellence:
1. Chancellor’s Gold Medal - 3
2. Chairman’s Award - 8
3. Vice Chancellor’s Award - 11
4. Summa Cum Laude - 52
5. Magna Cum Laude - 56
6. Cum Laude - 30
While cordially congratulating all the graduating students the Honorable Chancellor emphasized on the need of quality education and importance of research in his speech.
The Chairman of AIUB Dr. Anwarul Abedin in his speech congratulated the graduates for their remarkable achievement. As the Founding chairman he hoped that the fresh graduates have been endowed with sufficient knowledge and skill to venture out into the world and confidently face any challenge that our society and the world face today. He concluded his speech with the hope and optimism that the government will continue to give assistance and support to the private Universities in all their future endeavors as well.
The Vice Chancellor of AIUB urged the students to follow their dreams whether; “good or bad – and turn every dream into solutions, cures and new knowledge”. She mentioned in her speech that although we are honoring the graduates here today; it is actually the graduates who are honoring us by displaying their ‘love of learning’. She extended her appreciation to the AIUB Faculty for mentoring “tomorrow’s scholars” and also for furthering the “legacy of an exceptional education”. She also acknowledged the fact that behind the success of each and every graduate there is a lot of sacrifice, understanding, cooperation and of course love of their families. She concluded her speech with a message for the AIUB graduates to have the values of “Creativity, Critical thinking” and “Civic engagement”.
The Convocation speaker Former Advisor to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh, Ministry of Education, Science and ICT, Mr. ASM Shahjahan congratulated the new graduates for their remarkable achievement and to AIUB for reaching the milestone of the 11th Convocation. He hoped that the fresh graduates would continue to contribute towards society and nation building empowered by the education imparted by AIUB.
The Founder & Vice Presidents of AIUB Mr. Hasanul A. Hasan (Treasurer), Mr. Ishtiaque Abedin, Ms. Nadia Anwar along with the Vice President (Academics) Prof. Tafazzal Hossain, Pro-vice Chancellor, Registrar, Vice Chancellors of other Universities, Academic Council members, Syndicate members, Deans and officers graced the Ceremony. Along with the graduating students and their families a large number of members of the print and electronic media also attended the 11th Convocation Ceremony of AIUB.
The Convocation Ceremony was followed by a banquet and a cultural program at 7.30 pm at the BICC on the same day.
